Why some new weather buoys are being left in the Great Lakes this winter

As we head into winter, almost all of the buoys that have been bobbing in the Great Lakes during the warmer months have been retrieved and will stay out of the water until springtime. However, the NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory is testing out new buoys that can stay in the water all year long.
