The gales of November: A Great Lakes windy weather phenomenon

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — The gales of November have a bit of an ominous reputation, made famous by the 1976 Gordon Lightfoot song "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald," but the Witch of November is to blame for hundreds of shipwrecks across the Great Lakes.

In summer, Michigan steams like a young man's dreams, but in the fall the skies turn gloomy and the gales blow as the Witch of November comes calling.
