As alewife deaths rise, Michigan aims to boost king salmon stocking

EMPIRE, MI — The Sleeping Bear Dunes coastline along Lake Michigan has become a fishy graveyard.
Along the high-water mark, groups of small, silvery fish carcasses pile in the sand; a scene reminiscent of past decades when the invasive prey fish, native to the Atlantic Ocean, died in such quantity they were removed using bulldozers.
